Discovery Family has special plans for the finale of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. After nine seasons, the series is finally coming to a close with a staggering 222 total episodes under its belt. The plan is a 90-minute special episode to close out the series. Alongside that, a special behind-the-scenes feature, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic – A Decade of Pony, will be available ahead of the finale’s airing.
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic started airing in 2010, spearheaded by animation vet, Lauren Faust. The series follows the studious unicorn, Twilight Sparkle, as she goes on adventures with her five friends and dragon assistant, Spike. Over the course of the years, the series built up a progressively wider cast and varied the primary focus from episodes tied to its normal six (referred to as the “Mane Six”) to the antics of the filly-led group, the Cutie Mark Crusaders.
The series even made quite a few notable celebrities join in on the fun including John de Lancie, “Weird Al” Yankovic, William Shatner, Patton Oswalt, and more.
While the show is popular among children, it also found a home in the hearts of an older audience called the “brony” fandom. Like any fandom, there are dedicated fans who use the fandom to express themselves. Some write fanfictions, create artwork, make jewelry, produce fan-made projects for the enjoyment of others, and more.
With the final days of the series coming, there’s no telling what will happen to the fandom, but what can be said is this is likely not the end of the franchise as a whole. It took Hasbro until 2010 to hit the mark and make a cartoon based on the My Little Pony toy-line that actually succeeded in drawing the attention of viewers.
The 90-minute My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic finale is going to air October 11, 2019.
