Frozen broke a trope of Disney films including princesses and ending with a big romance. While Anna was smitten by Kristoff, Elsa was left alone. But, to some, that was a good thing. This sparked a large debate of whether Elsa would be the first gay princess. With Frozen 2 quickly approaching, the headcanons started once again. But, songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, were at the ready to fend those expecting a same-sex Elsa romance.
The duo outright said it won’t be delving into that side of Elsa. Instead, the film appears to be making an effort to answer why she has powers to begin with.
Like the first movie, Elsa is not just defined by a romantic interest. There’s so many movies that define a woman by her romantic interest. That’s not a story that we wanted to tell at this point in time. What we really wanted to tell was if you have these powers, how do you grow and change and find your place in the world and find answers that haven’t been found before?
Frozen 2 is also going to explain a bit more as to where Elsa and Anna’s parents were going before their ship crashed.
The plausibility of a same-sex Elsa romance in a sequel was always a few murmurs here and there. But, as people a part of the film acknowledged the theory, some of which even approving of the LGBTQ+ romance. After the trailer launched, though, speculation heightened when a new female character appeared in the trailer briefly.
